Conducting study of the status of protected areas and wetlands and Natura 2000 sites in the municipalities along the Danube from Vidin to Oryahovo and in Romania from Svinita to Salcia

The study will include the following: identification and analysis of wetlands and protected areas Natura 2000; specific measures and recommendations for the protection, maintenance and restoration of wetlands and protected areas; European best practices for management of wetlands and protected areas Natura 2000 and innovations for the protection and preservation of ecosystems; Detailed map of wetlands, protected areas and Natura 2000 sites along the Danube from Vidin to Oryahovo in Bulgaria and from Svinita to Salcia in Romania.

Organization of 4 seminars in Bulgaria (Vidin, Lom, Oryahovo and Kozloduy) and 4 in Romania (Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Dubova, Eselnita and Svinita)

The main objective of the seminars is to present to stakeholders the status of protected areas, wetlands and Natura 2000 sites located along the Danube, information about habitats, species of animals, birds and plants on both sides of the river. During the workshops will be presented summarized version of the study, identified environmental problems in the regions, will be discuss possibilities to solve them, and will be specify sites.

 

Developing common strategies for managing protected areas in the target area border

The strategy will include: Measures to protect species and habitats, description of protected areas; specific measures and recommendations that can be applied by local authorities and stakeholders for management of protected areas; Programs and strategic actions to improve the natural conservation status of species and habitats in the CBC region; European practices for managing Natura 2000 sites;

Organizing two traveling Scout camp in the protected areas in Bulgaria and Romania

The both scout camps will be attended by 10 young people from Bulgaria and 10 young people from Romania. The camp will consist of three parts.

  • – Visit of contaminated sites in protected Natura 2000 areas and cleaning of some of them.
  • – Visit the wetlands and protected Natura 2000 sites along the Danube and get acquainted with the flora and fauna.
  • – The development of an art objects collected rubbish, which will be shown during the cleaning campaign “Plums for junk”.

Development of promotional documentary movie

In order to promote the project and raise awareness of the community on issues related to environmental protection will be develop the project documentary movie with duration 40 minutes. The film will include footage of eco initiatives such as the Scout camp, brief information about protected areas in the target region, flora and fauna on both sides of the Danube and interviews with local environmentalists. The film will be distributed during the cleaning campaign and the final project conference on DVD. It will be in Bulgarian language with subtitles in English and Romanian.

Organizing cleaning campaigns under the slogan “Plums for junk in 4 places in Bulgaria and 4 places in Romania

The campaigns will be held in the towns of Vidin, Lom, Oryahovo and Kozloduy in Bulgaria and Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Orsova, Garla mare and Vrata in Romania. In order to attract more volunteers as participants in cleaning campaign one month in advance will run messages with specific dates and information about places where will be held the campaign in various media channels. To the participants in the campaign will be distributed promotional materials – T-shirts and hats.

Organizing information campaigns in two schools in Drobeta-Turnu Severin and two schools in Vidin

The first information campaign will be held on February 2 – Day of wetlands in schools in Vidin and in Drobeta Turnu Severin. Each campaign will involve 150 children who will be given promotional materials and will present them adapted to their age information on protected areas Natura 2000. The second information campaign will be held on the occasion of Danube Day on 29 June again in schools in Vidin and in Drobeta Turnu Severin. During this campaign ecologist professor will present the children adapted to their age information about flora and fauna in the two regions.

 

Development of trilingual project web site

A web site will contain detailed description of the project, project partners, database of all developed by the project products and brochures. The web site will be available in, Romanian, Bulgarian and English languages.

Final Conference

At the end of the project the partners will organize final conference in Vidin district. At this conference will participate 50 participants, representatives of local authorities, medias, ecological organizations and other stakeholders. During this conference the lecturers will present all achieved results by the project (the developed studies and the strategy for management of protected areas in the CBC area. The main objective of the Conference is to discuss the strategy for management of protected areas in the CBC region and to improve it with the feedback of participants.

 At the end of the Conference the participants will sign a Memorandum for future cooperation in the sphere of protection of protected areas and Natura 2000 sites.
